Lloyd Alexander, 1964
These books (The Book of Three, The Black Cauldron, The Castle of Llyr, Taran Wanderer, and The High King) have all held up beautifully. Unlike The Wizard of Earthsea books (so serious!), these have a sense of humor, or at least characters who have a sense of humor. Eilonwy, the princess, is funny, smart, and a pleasure.
Roald Dahl, 1964
Whatever you do, do NOT read the sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, which somehow manages to be one of the worst books I’ve ever read.
